2012 Turret tour ~ 11th August.

A joint event by BHI (ipswich) and AHS (East Anglia)

Turret clock tours have taken us all over East Anglia in search of these fascinating clocks. Click on the button for details of previous years.

Turret Reports

In 2012, we are planning visits in the area of Bury St. Edmunds.

Details will be announced later. Expect to begin at 10 a.m. and continue until around 4.30. A lunch stop will be included.

All ages are welcome, but turret clocks are installed in some awkward places, and a reasonable level of fitness is needed to climb the steps and ladders. If you are not up to the challenge, you will still be welcome to join us and investigate the buildings at ground level.

Put the date in your diary NOW - 11th August 2012.

Formed in 1954, the Ipswich and District Branch (no. 19) of the British Horological Institute has an active membership covering the whole of East Anglia. The Branch holds INDOOR MEETINGS on the fourth Tuesday of each month from February to June and from September to November in the well-appointed premises of the Quaker Meeting House, Fonnereau Road, Ipswich, IP1 3JH. There are usually VISITS AND TOURS in July and August and an ANNUAL DINNER in January.

The indoor meetings include lectures, demonstrations, auctions or “bring and buy” sales and open evenings where members can show their latest projects, discuss their problems and share ideas. Books from our extensive BRANCH LIBRARY are available for members to borrow free of charge. A full catalogue of books can be downloaded.

Professional and experienced members are always on hand to give advice and support to those with less expertise. Members receive a branch NEWSLETTER in advance of each meeting.

The Branch supports cultural events in the area and represents the Institute at the twice yearly ESSEX CLOCK FAIR. Members are regularly involved at BHI Headquarters and contribute articles and branch reports to the Horological Journal.

We encourage those attending branch meetings to become members of the British Horological Institute, but visitors are always welcome.

In August 2004, to celebrate our 50th. anniversary, we mounted an exhibition entitled "ClockWatching" at Ipswich Corn Exchange on August 3-7, 2004. We exhibited a number of items at the BHI 150th Anniversary Exhibition in 2008, then at Tymperleys Museum in Colchester.

We are always looking for new members, and we welcome amateurs and professionals alike. Contact the Secretary here.

E-books. For those interested in historical books, but without the budget to be a collector, Ian Coote has gathered together a collection of horologically related books available free from the internet, and scanned William Derham's "The Artificial Clockmaker".  For a modest £10 (£12 by post), including a donation to branch funds, you can possess 2 CDs with facsimile copies of no less than 33 books.
